Course Description

This course is designed for those seeking a entry level Webmaster position within a governmental structure (GS, military, prime/subcontractor) or commercial businesses that want to develop and maintain an E-Commerce Website. This course also includes instruction on applying the new Federal Section 508 Disabilities Act to web pages as well as other government Web policies.

Upon successful completion of this course the student receives the certification of Webmaster - Federal Government Emphasis.

This course prepares the student to take the Comptia iNet+ certification exam or the Electronics Technician Association CWS (Certified Web Specialist) exam.

Course Objectives:
Internet Basics
Describe Internet history and ownership. Demonstrate a knowledge of Internet architecture. Describe Internet servers and their associated ports. Identify the Internet protocols and the OSI Internet Model. Describe Internet connectivity. Demonstrate a knowledge of IP addresses and the Domain Name Service. Recognize URI's, URL's and URN's and discover the major Internet Resources. Intro to Web Programming.  Describe the W3C, the rule-making organization of the Web. Explain the Web Accessibility Initiative and accessibility principles. Describe tools to create and validate web pages. Explain the differences between full featured and interpreted web languages. Identify web programming languages, their syntaxes and uses. Describe client and server side processes.
Programming in XHTML with Accessbility
Identify the XHTML syntax. Describe what tag pairs, empty elements and attributes are and how they work. Describe the difference between block level elements, text level elements and character entities. Review some of the more common attributes and tags. Describe encoding and validation procedures. Hands on coding of important aspects of 508 such as div and span tags, skip links, title attributes and more.  Build a validated, accessible, 508 compliant Web site that will later be linked to a Cascading Style Sheet.
Cascading Style Sheet Basics
Describe style sheets, their utility, and need. Describe cascading style sheet accessibility and 508 compliance. Read style sheets and understand their functions. Use style sheets to enhance and extend web pages. Create a style sheet that links back to the Web site created in XHTML. Validate style sheets using evolving online tools.  Utilize an XHTML validator and accessibility validator to confirm your pages accessibility under the new 508 disability laws.
Web Design and Graphics
Demonstrate how to create a Site Preparation Document. Describe interface design and user control. Demonstrate a knowledge of navigation techniques. Identify crucial web design elements for Web Sites. Describe writing styles on the web. Describe fonts and typography. Define color on the web. Identify images and how to manipulate them. Identify how to test, launch and maintain Web sites.
FrontPage 2002 with Accessibility
Understand the utility of the Front Page application. Navigate the views and options within the window. Build a Web site utilizing a cascading style sheet and XTHML within the Front Page framework. Incorporate databases through the Front Page interface. Apply accessibility and 508 standards. Publish a website using the Front Page tools and maintenance infrastructure. Be aware of Front Page quirks and nuances.
E-Business & Marketing
Explain the history of E-Business. Demonstrate knowledge Portals. Define government and military laws, regulations and policies for the web. Review Internet Marketing techniques.
JavaScript with Accessibility
Understand the use of JavaScript to enhance the appearance and functionality of a Web site. Incorporate prewritten JavaScript's into Web pages. Begin to understand JavaScript programming. Build a collection of resources that can be used to find and create more scripts. Describe how to make JavaScript accessible and adhere to 508 standards.
Java Survival
Understand the use of Java to enhance the appearance and functionality of a web site. Incorporate prewritten Java applets into web pages. Build a collection of resources that can be used to incorporate more applets. Describe how to make Java accessible and adhere to 508 standards.
Multimedia
Identify the advantages and disadvantages of multimedia. Identify the various technologies behind animation. Describe the different Browser helpers and plug-ins. Identify the new Browser changes and how they will affect incorporating multimedia into Web pages. Explain the technologies and uses of audio, video and streaming media on the Web. Recognize accessibility and 508 problems and solutions in Web animation and multimedia. Produce an animation using SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) Language.
Student Labs:
Student labs include utilizing the following applications; Command Line Tools (Traceroute, Netstat, NSlookup, FTP), Whois Gateway, HTTP Header Results Gateway, Macromedia HomeSite, FrontPage 2002, Top Style Lite, Image Editing Software, XTHML Validator, 508 Validator and Windows based functions such as Notepad and installing and trusting digital certificates.
Instructional Methods:
This course combines lecture, presentation, laboratory hands-on exercises, discussions and problem solving.  Assessments will be made by practical exercises and examinations/quizzes.
